Writing an Article.

Lesson1

  1. Before writing an article don’t forget the following:

When we write an article about the country and its people, we can divide our article into six paragraphs. In the first paragraph, we include the name of the country, its location and its features. In the second paragraph, we write what the people look like and we describe their character. In the third paragraph, we write about where the people live and what work they do. In the fourth paragraph, we write about what they eat. In the fifth paragraph, we write about what they do in their free time.

In the last paragraph, we write a few words about the country. We normally use present simple.§§§

Lesson 3

  1. Read an article for a student magazine about the advantages and disadvantages of living without a TV. The computer has found 10 mistakes (grammar, punctuation, or spelling). Correct them.

Living without a TV

Almost every family today have a TV, in fact probably more than one, and people everywhere spend hours watching it. But a few families choose to live without a TV because they think there are advantages.

The first advantage is that families spend more time talk to each other. Secondly, they spend more time doing more creative things like reading or painting. Thirdly, they spend more time outdoors, and they usually more fit.

On the other hand, there are also disadvantages. For example, children who don’t have a TV may feel differents from there school friends, and often won’t know what they are talking about. Also it is not true that all TV programes are bad. There are also good ones, like documentarys, and people who live without a TV may know less about whats happening in the world.

In conclusion, althought living without a TV has some advantages. I think today it’s unrealistic and that we should try to turn the TV out when there’s nothing good on

  1. Answer the questions, without looking into the text, from memory.

  1. What are the three advantages of life without a TV?

  2. What are the two disadvantages?

  3. Is the writer for or against having a TV?

  1. You are going to write a similar article about mobile phones. First, with a partner, make a list of the advantages and disadvantages.

  2. Now decide which are the three biggest advantages and number them 1-3. Do the same with the disadvantages.

  3. Write an article called Mobile phones-a great invention?

Begin the article with this introduction:

Almost everybody has a mobile phone. But is it a great invention? I think there are both advantages and disadvantages.

PLAN what you’re going to write. Use the paragraph summaries below and the Useful language to help you.

§2 write 2 or 3 advantages

§3 write 2 or 3 disadvantages

§4 Conclusion-decide if you think mobiles area great invention or not.

CHECK the article for mistakes (grammar, punctuation, spelling)

Lesson4

  1. Read the article and answer the following questions.

  1. What is the problem with the Baikal lake?

  2. What suggestions does the writer make?

  3. What results/examples does the writer use to support these suggestions?

IT”S CLEAN-UP TIME!

□1 Over the last twenty-five years, the shore of the most beautiful fresh water lake Baikal has become one of the least attractive beaches in the country. What was once a beautiful shore has now turned into a dirty shore covered in litter, and factory waste. Fortunately, it is not too late to clean up this mess.

□2 The government could help by passing laws to stop the factories from dumping their waste in the sea. This would help to make it a safe place both for people and for animals, where people could swim without the threat of illness and for animals and birds to live in.

□3 The government could also make the companies responsible for factory waste pay money to help to clean up the shore. If they did this, the shore of the lake would look better than it does today.

□4 The people can help the lake too, by starting a volunteer project to clear up all the litter that people have dropped on the shore and in the lake. Similar projects have been extremely successful in many other parts of the world.

□5 All in all, if the suggestions in this article became reality, the shore of the lake and the lake Baikal itself, would be something to be proud of.

  1. Read the article again and match the paragraphs to the headings.

Suggestion 1 (result/example)…………………………

State the problem …………………………………….

Suggestion 2 (result/example)…………………………

Summarise writer’s opinion. …………………………

Suggestion 3 (result/example)…………………………

  1. Match the suggestions to their results

  1. Encourage people to buy only recycled paper

  1. Make sentences using suggestions and results from the table above.

  2. Use the beginning and ending given to write an article entitled “SAVE OUR FORESTS!” use the text “IT”S CLEAN-UP TIME! as a model.

Not so long ago, most of the dry land on our planet was covered with forests. Today, most of these forests, as well as many of the plants and animals which used to live in them, have disappeared. What is more, they will continue to do so unless we start taking drastic measures to save them now, while we still have time….

….Such measures would not only help our forests to survive, but also the rare plants and animals which are only just surviving there today. The time has come to stop the destruction and begin the healing.
